If you want to know what's in an asteroid before you start mining, you need a mining scanner as well. The mining beam works like a continuous laser, and you click to turn it on or off. Target it (press B) and get within 100m of it. To mine an asteroid, you need to have a mining beam on your ship. In gray space they are often pirate that will attack you if you get too close.ĩ.
